SAINT JAMES INFIRMARY, Louis Armstrong

Saint James Infirmary é uma canção anónima que faz parte do cancioneiro folk americano, cuja autoria é usualmente creditada a Irving Mills. Foi Louis Armstrong que a tornou famosa em 1928, tirando-a das bocas tradicionais e injectando-a na mainstream do Jazz da época, sendo dele a mais bela e expressiva interpretação até hoje conhecida.

Saint James Infirmary é baseada numa canção tradicional inglesa chamada "The Unfortunate Rake", que conta a história de um marinheiro que gasta o seu dinheiro em prostitutas e morre de uma doença venérea. O nome da canção inspira-se no Hospital de Saint James, pertencente a uma fundação religiosa que se dedicava ao tratamento de leprosos. Foi fechado por Henrique VIII em 1532, quando este adquiriu para construir o Palácio de Saint James.

A canção, tal como foi cantada por Satchmo, é um lamento do "velho Joe Mc Guinny" afogado em wiskey, que tinha ido visitar a sua mulher a Saint James Infirmary e tragicamente descobriu que ela estava morta. 

Saint James Infirmary foi interpretada, posteriormente, por inúmeros cantores, cantoras e grupos, entre os quais se destacam Cab Calloway, Red Allen, Allen Toussaint, Lou Rawls, Cassandra Wilson, Joe Cocker entre outros.
